With Chumpy Edwards playing in front of his Mum for the first time since he did a Barry Hall impersonation for the Tugun Tigers in Queensland, the early signs were not good when star utility, Sunny Garcia, arrived wearing his sister’s black gardening shorts.

Keen to show his Mum that he was really a big softy, Chumpy dominated the ruck in the first term, despite the midfield struggling to get the ball until a late goal to Laz provided the team with some confidence going into the second stanza.

However, in a strange move to start the second quarter, stand in coach Tank Harris moved Echo favourite wannabe, Peter “Hillbilly” Hill into the ruck, although this ended abruptly when Hilly bent his fingernail in his first tap and went down in a screaming heap to ensure he again had his name in the paper.  Fortunately his post game manicure showed no signs of bruising.

The day also saw memorable goals kicked by Kervo and Sunny Garcia, whose Pele special was soccered off the ground from the boundary, some 40 metres from goal.  There was also the inevitable Gumboots Beale highlight when he somehow kicked the ball off the ground to himself, ran to half forward whilst taking a bounce, and then booted the ball out on the full into the canteen attendants.

At the post match press conference, Coach Harris again defended the no show of Echo favourite, Anzac Netscher, citing his burgeoning media profile and preference to earn brownie points watching his daughter play soccer as a legitimate excuse.
