A combination of Saturday scheduling and several players with netball and shopping commitments saw the Cats struggling for numbers in the lead up to last week’s blockbuster against the Central Crocs.
However, coach Tank Harris took it all in his stride as he combined with high profile player manager Mike “Wolfie” Westphal, who has more numbers in his little black book than Al Capone’s bookkeeper, to complete some last minute recruiting that ensured 18 Cats’ jumpers were in position to start the game. Riding on the back of Fading Star nominee, Dave “Vijay” Singh, the Cats took the game right up to the Crocs and were set to grab the lead on the stroke of half time when the clubs’ skills coach, Gary “Gumboots” Beale, took a strong mark in the goal square. Unfortunately, Gumboots’ shot from 5 metres out and directly in front missed everything except the bouncy castle attendant, who fortuitously escaped with only mild concussion. Despite the disappointment following Gumboots’ 73rd clanger for the season, a composed Tank gave an inspiring half time address as he drew inspiration from the story of Guy “Anzac” Netscher, who has gone from a suburban no name to Echo favourite and a short listed candidate for the Chippendales. With the players on a high, they went out and dominated the second half on the back of superb displays from Chumpy Edwards and Dashing Dave Dougherty, with cameo last quarter appearances from Lord Hamling and Dezi the Bear. At his post match press conference, Tank paid tribute to the Cats’ spirit and also apologised to the kids for the temporary closure of the bouncy castle. |
