After playing champagne football in perfect conditions at Paterson’s Stadium a week before, the Cats were brought back to reality in their game against Kingsway at the Wembley Mud Wrestling Dome.
Despite missing Echo Favourite Anzac Netscher (media commitments), the Cats named a near full strength side for the match and Keith “The Negotiator” Edwards gave the Cats the best opportunity for a fast start after talking the opposition captain into kicking into a 20 goal breeze. Unfortunately Edwards’ request to kick with the wind for all four quarters was declined. With the wind behind them, the Cats were off to a flyer when Golden Boots McPherson goaled in the opening seconds. However the Cats’ ninety seconds of supreme dominance ended abruptly with the controversial loss of defender Sunny Garcia and this proved to be the turning point in the match. Immediately after Garcia left the field, the heavens opened up, and an old fashioned mud fest ensued with the waterlogged Cats struggling to get the ball into the forward line for the rest of the match. At the post match press conference, high profile player manager Wolfy Westphal allayed fears of a serious injury to Garcia, revealing that the livewire backman had subbed himself off after seeing rain clouds above, citing the “No Play if Raining” clause of his contract. Best players for the Cats included Chumpy Edwards who fought out of his weight division against Andre the Giant, and Sully Sullivan whose stylish goal late in the game added some respectability to the scoreboard. Defenders Stewy “Buckets” Maxton and Damien Hulk-Hogan also battled hard, although Kingsway were too good, running out winners by 24 points. |
