A sellout crowd for the Western Derby witnessed an epic contest as the Eastern Hills Cats and Vic Park Pigs battled it out in the curtain raiser last Sunday.

The Cats got off to a flyer with goals to Golden Boots McPherson, Brett Kervball and Aussie Remigio, who kicked his first major since under 13s, although a second quarter revival by the Pigs had the Cats holding only a slender half time lead.  The third quarter was an arm wrestle with Sporty "Wrong-way" Campbell scoring a goal for the Cats and then doing his best to help score one for the Pigs.

With scores locked at the last change, the Cats threw everything at the Pigs, with human crash test dummy Pup Hearne leading the way. Unfortunately Hearne’s courage resulted in him having to be extricated from the hot dog stand using the Jaws of Life, following a heavy collision with crowd hero, Freight Train Hansen. However, goals to GB McPherson and Lazz Lowrie gave the Cats a narrow lead and the gutsy blue and whites hung on for a memorable 10 point win to maintain their unbeaten record at Paterson Stadium.

Ruckman Chumpy Edwards was awarded the Lord Hamling Medal for best on ground and other good players were Brad Simolicious, Sunny Garcia, Sully Sullivan, Scoop Bittner and Echo Favourite Anzac Netscher.  Rumours that Netscher was later spotted wining and dining in the GWS corporate box are unconfirmed.

Following a lap of honour the euphoric Cats returned to the change rooms where, in a moment that will be etched in Cats’ folklore, English import and team manager, Kevin “Striker” Bennett made light of the club not having a song when he broke into a raucous rendition of God Save the Cats.
